KSG Reborn

Well then, the past six weeks have been frantic to say the least! Four weeks of sales followed by a couple of weeks to strap the whole thing together ready for print. But what can I say, wa-hey we made it! Issue 47 is at the printers and will be delivered on Tuesday. If you can't wait that long to get a look at the guide you can download a copy below.

Anyway, for this issue I have to thank Gilly and Kate for working so well with the advertisers and filling our re-launch issue, may the gods be blessing you both as I do!

Much many thanks go out to Keven B. for his massive contribution of the most up-to-date Kep maps ever made, nice one bud!

Thanks also go out to the islander Donkey Dave for getting it together for an afternoon and submitting his first article, and of course we thank his mentor Mark who kept the fluids flowing until completion.

We too have to thank our advertisers who have made this relaunch possible, I am in your debt.

Well then, here you go, the new issue 47, hot in the press, still.

American Ponds

These few pics are from an unfinished project the late Alan Headteaser was working on, they show how in the last few years the Cambodian farmers have been able to fill in the mass of ponds the US Air Forces gifted them in the 60's and 70's.

On the theme of flights...

Below is the story of a brave British airman that landed at Kampot airfield during WWII.

If you didn't know, Cambodia was then part of French Indo-China, ruled at that time by the Vichy French and under occupation by the Japanese, therefore it was a pretty dodgy place for a British airman to land.

Anyway its a cracikin story and well worth a read, enjoy.

World First!

Indeed Kampot has been involved in many world firsts, but this one stands out.

Yes the sleepy little town once was part of the worlds first circumnavigation by an aeroplane!

Twas back in 1924 and even has a book covering the story of the epic journey, check it out on the Internet Archive.

Tim's Birthday

It was great catching up with Tim for his birthday on a sunny day in Boscombe. As many of you may know Tim used to run one of the most run down guest houses on lakeside, Phnom Penh, it was also probably the best as it for the mast part was quiet and boasted by far the best views over the lake. Sadly those days are gone, so has the lake as it has been filled and is now being built on.

Tim's little celebration on the sandy beach was dotted by folks with a connection to Cambodia so it was great chatting and exchanging experiences of the Bodge with the multitude that attended and much enjoyed.

Nuff said but here's to the next 40 Tim, blessin ya bud!

The Forgotten Nelson's Column

Atop a hill overlooking Portsmouth sits a lonely monument to Britain's greatest naval hero.

Ask anyone if they know where Nelsons column is and they will say London, but the first one built is in Portsmouth, paid for by veterans of Nelson's last battle at Trafalgar.

If you ever pass this way have a look, here is a link to the location on Google Maps.

The Navy

Royal Cambodian Navy
Untill reciently Cambodia still had a couple of Russian built Turya class torpedo fast attack craft rusting away in Phnom Penh, they were last used in the 90's when the UN re-engined them and used them for river patrol duties. They have now gone to I know not where. They mainly have small patrol boats for coastal and river duties, the largest being a Russian Shershen class patrol fast attack craft.

Old and obsolete you may say, well cop this...

British Royal Navy
HMS Victory is a 104-gun first-rate ship of the line, she was launched in 1765 and is still in service being the flagship of the First Sea Lord of the Royal Navy. She has completed 241 years' of service, and at a cost of £63,176 and 3 shillings to build, she has worked out to be a real bargain.
